Probably the most beautiful neon sign in the history of Katowice was created in 1964. It was installed on the building of a historic residential and commercial building at ul. 3 Maja 13, known as Oswald Findeisen’s Tenement House. The illumination project was prepared by mgr inż. Zbigniew Pierzchała. It depicted three monkeys hanging from a branch standing out from the façade. For the 1960s, it was a daring project which certainly brought much joy to passers-by and out-of-town visitors. The idea behind the monkeys is unknown, and we do not know whether they were an advertisement or a light installation.
The building itself has changed its functionality many times over the years. It housed a delicatessen, a jewellers’ warehouse and, after the Second World War, the ground floor retail space changed owners several times.
For several years now, the monkeys, recreated from archival material, can be admired near the Market Square. They were hung on lampposts by the playground to once again bring joy to the people of Katowice and our visitors after more than 50 years.
